3 Things Your Gardener Doesn't Want You To Know

By Riche Goldmann

The Importance of Watering In order to not only look good, but to survive, your lawn and garden need the proper amount of water. In some countries, this is not an issue because there is ample supply of rainfall to keep roots moisturized. However, this is not the case in other countries and when it is apparent that your lawn and garden are not getting enough water, it is time for you to step in and do the job of Mother Nature. Some tips you should follow to properly water your lawn and garden are:

1. Pay attention to the color of your garden and lawn. A healthy lawn should exhibit a rich green color and should feel soft, not crunchy, under your feet. Any patches of yellow, straw like grass is a sign that more watering is needed.

2. Watering of your lawn should only occur at one of two particular times in a day: you can choose to water you lawn early in the morning before the sun comes up (maybe around 5 a.m.) or after the sun has already begun to set (maybe around 9 p.m.).

3. Watering should happen at a minimum of once a week, but during a drought more watering will be needed, as much as 3 times a week.

4. Do not drown your grass. Just like under watering, over watering your lawn and garden can kill it. As a general rule, about 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week is necessary to maintain healthy grass. To keep track of the amount of the amount you've water, buy a rain gauge, or you can use a small can or bowl. Once the measuring tool you use reaches 1 or 1.5 inches, you know you are done.

Get Rid of Weeds and Fertilize Getting rid of weeds is really important as well; not only do they look bad, but they are also unhealthy, so either weed eat them or pull them out by hand. In addition, you should use a little fertilizer, preferably one with a combination of nitrogen phosphates and potash. The best time to fertilize is in the spring.

Once you have done your fertilizing in the spring, go back and re-fertilize again in the summertime. This time use a fertilizer with weed control.

Aerate Your Lawn It is important to use your lawn aerator regularly. What is an aerator? It is a tool that will help turn the soil and create holes in the top portion of the soil so that grass roots can get enough water and air. This also allows earthworms (which are a natural form of fertilizer) in to do their work.

You want to use your aerator during the autumn and spring and only use it when your soil is damp. You should also use it just before planting seeds in your lawn or garden for optimal growth. Using your lawn aerator on a regular basis will help you to create a beautiful lawn, garden and landscape.

These are just three tips that will keep your lawn and garden healthy and beautiful and also keep the lawn and garden person away. - 2456
